At the very North end of Belize, close to the border of Mexico, just past the Shipstern Natural Reserve is Sarteneja. Little fishermen village, inhabited by descendants of the Mayans and Mestizo's from the Yucatan Peninsula, these natives of Sarteneja sail on handcrafted wooden boats. Population is approximatively 3,000, principally young people, amongst them 40 persons coming from Canada, USA, France and Belgium have chosen to leave here (part-time or full time). In the bay of Chetumal. 5 hours drive from Cancun. 3 hours drive from Belize City. 1h30 from San Pedro (by boat). 3 hours by boat to the legendary Blue Hole. And 2 hours from the 2nd largest corral reef of the world. No white sandy beach here! Sorry. But the color of the water is beautiful and changes all the time through the day. The sunsets are marvelous and there are plenty spots along the bay where you can relax and meditate for hours, watching the horizon, the beautiful clouds and all their different shapes, the pelicans and other beautiful birds that spend the year or not with us here. Sartenejanos are very friendly and welcoming. It can get very very hot here from April to October which correspond to the rainy season and low season as well. The cooler season is from October to March, which correspond to the high season. The water is fresh and nice and temperature is easier on our body too and it is way less humid. Mousquitos are as well less present during the cooler months which is really really appreciated here as they can be millions here the rest of the year! But after a few weeks your skin gets adjusted to it..... or not. For us now it is okay. They dont bother us anymore. But dont worry we have repilant available here in the few shops in the village. Beside relaxing or meditating you could as well take a walk in the jungle near by with a local tour guide which could take you to a Mayan site. Visit Shipstern Reserve, rent a Kayak in the village at the Toursim Office Center, go for the day to San Pedro or Cayes Cauker for 2 or 3 days (all by boat). Take a walk or bike ride to the Mannatees center. Visits one of the last boat builder and see his work. Etc. Etc.
